Support Available Following Latest from Trial of Chris Brain

The Diocese of Bristol recognises that this will be a difficult time for victims, survivors and all impacted by the trial of Chris Brain following the partial verdict of the jury at the Inner London Crown Court on 20 August 2025.  We would like to assure anyone affected that support is available.

Mr Brain, a former priest in the Diocese of Sheffield has been found guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault against nine women. (A ‘not guilty’ verdict was returned on another 15 charges of indecent assault).  Jurors are continuing to deliberate on a further four counts of indecent assault and one charge of rape.

If you, or anyone you are in contact with, have been affected by this case or wish to talk confidentially, please know that support is available. The Diocese of Sheffield have commissioned Thirtyone:eight and Safe Spaces to provide independent support. You can find details of this support on their website.

Although the matters addressed in court do not pertain to the Diocese of Bristol, if you have any safeguarding concerns, we encourage you to contact our safeguarding team at safeguarding@bristoldiocese.org.

Safeguarding remains an absolute priority throughout the Church of England and within the Diocese of Bristol.  We are committed to learning from past failures and reinforcing our resolve to protect the vulnerable in our communities.
