St Stephen’s Church, Southmead has launched a new Teatime Church pilot, offering a creative and accessible way for children and families to explore faith outside of traditional Sunday worship.
The initiative was developed in response to a desire to disciple children at the church, while recognising that the parish does not currently have the resources to run a conventional Sunday School. Instead, Teatime Church takes place during the week and combines food, storytelling, prayer and fun in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
Since the pilot began, weekly sessions have attracted an average of around 30 people, including approximately 20 children and 10 adults. Many of the children attending do not usually come to church on Sundays, making the pilot a significant point of connection with the wider community.
Led by Revd Gaby Doherty, the sessions have created space not only for children to engage animatedly with Bible dramatisations, but also for parents and carers to connect more deeply with the life of the church. While children take part in teaching and activities, adults are invited to light candles, receive prayer, and share personal concerns in a supportive setting.
One particularly moving moment saw a parent light a candle in memory of their grandmother on the anniversary of her death, reflecting the pastoral support that Teatime Church has begun to offer.
“We’ve all had a great time. “It’s been powerful to see families engaging with faith together, and to watch both children and adults finding space to pray, reflect and be supported.” - Revd Gaby Doherty
The church is continuing to pilot Teatime Church and discern how this growing midweek congregation might shape its future ministry with children and families.
