The service, known as the enthronement, marked the symbolic start of her public ministry as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury.

Around 2,000 guests were present at Canterbury Cathedral, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside nurses and carers from Canterbury, to reflect Dame Sarah's long career as a nurse.

The Rt Revd Neil Warwick, Acting Bishop of Bristol and Bishop of Swindon, said:

“It was brilliant to join with leaders from across the world to celebrate Archbishop Sarah’s installation as Archbishop of Canterbury. She leads a Church that has a Christian presence in every village, town and city in England and a reach across our world. I pray that she will flourish and experience joy as she begins her public ministry across the Anglican Communion.”
