During Advent, churches across the Diocese, including the Cathedral, are holding alternative Christmas services for those experiencing grief, loss or loneliness. 'Blue Christmas' services, which are named after the Elvis Presley song, offer a space of remembrance and reflection for people who find celebration difficult during the festive period.

The services are open to all – not just regular Churchgoers - and are for anyone who finds the Christmas season difficult or prefers quiet worship amid the season’s intensity.
The Churches holding the services feel it is important to emphasise that the true meaning of Christ's birth at Christmas is as much for those attending these services as it is for those who feel joyful during the festive period. Blue Christmas services reflect on the Christmas story in a quieter key but still share in the deep joy of knowing that God loved the world enough to send his Son to be one of us.
Speaking about the reason for hosting the service, The Very Revd Dr Mandy Ford, Dean of Bristol Cathedral, said:
“We know that, for some people, Christmas can be a particularly stressful or lonely time. God comes to be with us at times like this, bringing peace and comfort for weary hearts and minds.”
The services often take place on or around the shortest day of the year, which this year falls on 21 December, and show that, even in the darkest places, light still shines through.
Speaking about the Blue Christmas service at St Martins Knowle, Revd Sam Denyer said:
“I've led 'Blue Christmas' services for several years, and they are a real gift to God's church. Fewer people turn up than for our Carol and Crib services, but I know that for those that do, it means everything. It means that they have a place in the Christmas story, and that the birth of Jesus is for them, too.”

Services are taking place across the Diocese in several Churches. If this season feels challenging for you or someone you know, you are warmly invited to join any of the gatherings.
