Governance

The Diocese of Bristol is led by the Bishop of Bristol and governed by our Diocesan Synod.

The Bishop's Council is also the Board of Directors for the Bristol Diocesan Board of Finance Ltd. and the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee.

Synodical governance provides a system for partnership with the Bishop, ensuring that the Diocese can consider matters together and move forward in agreement. Each of our deaneries is also governed by a Deanery Synod.

The Church of England is governed by the General Synod of which the Queen is Supreme Governor. General Synod legislates for the whole of the Church of England and debates matters of national and international importance. The Diocese of Bristol elects three Clergy and three Lay representatives alongside the Bishop of Bristol to be members of the General Synod.

The Diocesan Synod is an elected body which considers issues relating to the mission of the Church, advises the Bishop and is consulted by him and agrees the Dioceses financial plans.
