Day twenty-one: Meet Nick Childerhouse

Tony NjorogeNick’s ministry has grown and evolved over time. What began as a desire to preach and lead in church has expanded into a calling that bridges worship and practical care.

"I originally felt the call to preaching and leading in church alongside my day job, which Lay Ministry facilitated really well"

Following a career change, Nick was able to take on new aspects of ministry, including funeral ministry, which he found unexpectedly rewarding.

"Walking alongside families at such a difficult time in life has been a privilege"

Working part-time also gave Nick space to serve more fully during a time of vacancy in his benefice. But his ministry doesn’t stop at the church door. For the past two years, Nick has worked with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), helping people overcome problem debt, teaching budgeting skills, and running a weekly café that doubles as a drop-in for money advice.

"This job complements my LLM role, giving me real insight into our local community and the organisations working to help those in challenging circumstances. It also allows me to be very open about my faith and the hope I have in Jesus"

That openness has borne fruit, with many contacts from the CAP café now attending the current Alpha course. Nick’s story reminds us that ministry is about meeting people where they are, whether in church, in community spaces, or in moments of need.
