Hours: 28 hours per week (0.8fte contract)
Salary: pro-rata of £37,925 - £48,372, dependent on experience
Duration: Fixed-term maternity cover for one year, commencing April 2026
Duties
A diverse role providing property management for the diocesan housing portfolio (primarily clergy housing and residential lets) and Head Office.
No two days are the same, with property refurbishments and development work required throughout the year in addition to planned / preventative management and maintenance work on a regular basis, responding to clergy needs.
We also have an ambitious target for meeting Carbon Net Zero by 2030 in line with the Church of England directive on this; this role provides a crucial contribution to this, e.g., through the improvement of clergy housing heating, insulation, etc.
The Organisation
The Diocese of Bristol is the administrative area of the Church of England that covers the cities of Bristol and Swindon and the rural parishes of adjacent North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. There are more than 200 churches in the Diocese, led by hundreds of clergy, and around 15,000 children and young people attend our 71 church schools. In many ways the best description is that the Diocese is a family of the 30,000 or so Clergy, Staff, Parish Officers and Church attenders who work together with a common goal.
The Property Surveyor is part of the Housing and Glebe (Estates) Team of the Property and Estates Directorate. This is one of the Directorates that makes up the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) – the Charity that provides support services across the Diocese (see Diocese of Bristol). The Directorate and the DBF alike are a small and friendly community of likeminded professionals working from a modern office in Bradley Stoke, North Bristol, close to the M4 / M32 Junction. This role is based here but will be expected to travel widely across the diocese (own car must be provided, although travel expenses are reimbursed).
About You
You will be a people-oriented building surveyor with good experience of a range of modern and historic building types. No two days are the same in this role – you’ll be discussing the installation of thermal insulation in a Georgian vicarage one day; dealing with a water leak in a 1960s semi another day; and helping prepare a renovated Victorian home for new tenants the next. You will be working across the diocese, from inner-city Bristol to rural Wiltshire to suburban Swindon. Above all, you will enjoy caring for people as you go about caring for their homes – a crucial part of this job is supporting our clergy and our tenants who live in diocesan property.
You do not need to be a practicing Christian to apply to this role, but you should be comfortable in working closely with a faith community and in interacting directly with members of the clergy and their families.
Desired Skills and Experience:
An experienced property professional with significant experience ideally with a current professional membership, e.g. RICS/CIOB.
Good negotiation and contract management skills and competent in working to CDM 2015 regulations.
Extensive experience of client-side property management and worked experience of property transactions and their legal complexities.
Good working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and applying it in residential and commercial settings. A recognisable qualification in H & S is desirable.
We Also Offer
- Flexible working
- 28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays)
- A contributory pension scheme and life assurance
- A Health Cash Plan
- Company sick pay
- Free onsite parking
- A warm, supportive and values‑led team
