Parishes encouraged to support new scrap metal bill

ChurchCare is calling on parishes to write to their MP in support of a new Bill which aims to secure better regulation of the scrap metal trade.

Richard Ottaway MP (Con, Croydon South) has tabled the Private Members’ Bill which will receive its second reading on Friday July 13th.

The Bill addresses the need for an enforceable licensing system for scrap yards and regularises the new ban on cash for scrap, including a requirement to check and record photo ID at the point of sale.

Encouraging support for the Bill, ChurchCare said:

“The government has acted to outlaw cash payments for selling scrap metal and remove the cap on fines for yards convicted of an offence. However, this will not provide the legislative framework to ensure that the cash ban is effective and there is an exception for itinerant traders. Richard Ottaway’s Bill will address these matters.”
