The Bishops of Bristol and Swindon ordained over 40 people this weekend across four services at Bristol Cathedral – the largest number for many years.
Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, Bishop of Swindon, ordained 23 people as deacons as they begin ordained ministry on Saturday 30th June. The Dean of Bristol, Very Revd Dr David Hoyle, preached at both services having led the retreat for the deacons. The deacons, who come from all backgrounds, will serve their curacies in places right across the Diocese of Bristol to the other, from Stockwood in the south of Bristol to Highworth to the north-east of Swindon.
The deacons’ ordinations were followed by a further two services on Sunday 1st July when Rt Revd Mike Hill, Bishop of Bristol ordained 19 people as priests in the Church of England, having completed their first year in ordained ministry as deacons. Rt Revd Gordon Mursell, former Bishop of Stafford, led the retreat for those to be ordained priests and preached at both services.
“This was a wonderful weekend of celebration as those who have committed themselves to public ministry in the Church reached two significant staging posts in their ministries,” said Bishop Mike.
“It is a huge encouragement to see so many people in this diocese willing to take on these positions of service and leadership and my prayers are with them as they experience the privileges and challenges of ordained ministry.”
