Thoughts for each day in British Sign Language

A new daily devotions website using extracts from the Bible in British Sign Language (BSL) has been launched by a member of the Christian Deaf community in the Diocese.

Each day, a new Bible reading is featured on http://www.bsldailydevotions.co.uk together with a reflection and a prayer – all in BSL and English.

Ramon Woolfe, the Deaf media director of a company called Drip Media, attends the monthly service in British Sign Language at St Barnabas, Swindon.  Ramon was recently baptised after a long battle with cancer and has created a website in response to God’s calling.

“After months of watching Daily Devotions on the Deaf Missions Website in American Sign Language (ASL) and sharing its messages with other Christians, I felt the need for this to be shared among our British Sign Language (BSL) signers in this country,” explains Ramon.

“After time, my faith became stronger and I was baptised. I felt even more strongly that it was my duty to share the Daily Devotions and was encouraged in this by my minister, Canon Gill Behenna.

“Now, having beaten cancer, I wrote to my contact at Deaf Missions in America, seeking permission to re-produce the articles and deliver them in BSL. I was pleased to receive an immediate response from their Director, Joseph D. Josselyn who supported our vision.”

Founded in the US in 1970, “Deaf Missions” is a Christian mission dedicated to helping Deaf people see Jesus Christ, so they may accept Him as their Saviour and grow in Him. Deaf Missions serves people across more than 80 other countries.

The BSL Daily Devotions project has been funded by Go! Sign, a national, Deaf-led charity. It is Go! Sign’s vision that this work of Ramon’s will reach Deaf people in the UK with the message of the Gospel. Go Sign! has supported the concept of having a version for Deaf citizens of Britain and other countries where people can understand British Sign Language.
