Jubilee brings church celebrations, Big Thank Yous and Cathedral service

Churches were at the centre of celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee across the Diocese, culminating in a service at Bristol Cathedral featuring a memorable sermon from the Dean.

Churches hosted services, parties, barbeques and street parties, providing a focal point for celebrating the Queen’s remarkable service and example of Christian leadership.

The Cathedral provided a setting for the City of Bristol’s celebration on 17 June where 1000 people attended and listened to a sermon by the Dean where he spoke about the Kingdom of God.

“We have to look to Christ whose kingdom is in the future and has no boundaries and knows only the government of love. It is the Prince of Peace who saves, not politics, not power, not personality. That of course is the great truth we celebrate even when we also celebrate this diamond jubilee. It is the truth that the Queen herself defends.

“For in Her Majesty The Queen, we have set at the heart of our national life precisely a person who has devoted her life to principle, not power; to Law, to Justice in Mercy, to faith.”

Parishes also gave a great response to requests for ‘The Big Jubilee Thank you’ letter to The Queen. These have now been sent off to Church House London.
