Voyage
Voyage
Voyage is a unique leadership development programme. It brings individuals leading in a variety of contexts, church-based and ‘secular’ roles, into a leadership development community united by their commitment to lead from the base of their Christian commitment. It seeks to answer the question: ‘What is distinctive about Christian leadership?’ and to help participants to live out that ideal in their daily working lives.
Over the course of a nine month period, participants become a community of about 20 people that comes together to explore leadership theory, practice and challenges. We meet in plenary sessions for teaching and as smaller ‘Action Learning Sets’ for peer-driven discussion and accountability sharing. As a result, participants will set and accomplish leadership goals, lead better with others and grow as human beings.
A Voyage community has six characteristics:
- A community of faith, where individuals learn to lead from a base of Christian discipleship. This provides a common value base and framework and an ability to engage with spiritual and ethical aspects of leadership in a secure environment. It allows those who do not lead in an explicitly "Christian" context, to apply their faith to their leadership practice.
- A community that values unique identity, where leadership development starts where an individual is and builds on their own gifts, passion and character.
- A community of diverse leadership context, where individuals share experience of leading both within and beyond the church. This provides participants with opportunities to challenge their context-formed assumptions about leadership and learn to be “reflexive” about their leadership.
- A community of leadership practice, where individuals reflect on how they lead. Although informed by learning and theory, it is rooted in experience and has a bearing on what they actually do.
- A community of inquiry, where leaders are exposed to the best leadership thinking and theory – and can challenge it together and test it against their faith and experience.
- A community of challenge and support, where participants set goals and are held accountable to them. Mechanisms are in place to receive honest and constructive feedback from those from their context who are impacted by their leadership. It is also a place where participants challenge one another out of their comfort zones in the context of trustworthy relationships.
Following an introductory meeting (September), the Voyage cycle begins and ends with two residential meetings (October and July).
Voyage is led by three facilitators who have a broad base of experience in leadership and in teaching about leadership to MA standard. Each facilitator works with one of the Action Learning Sets to facilitate learning in that environment as well as offering teaching material to the whole group at the residentials and at the plenary sessions.
