Bristol Uganda Companion Link
In 1969, the Diocese
established a formal link with the
Anglican Church of Uganda, each deanery within the Bristol Diocese
being linked with a Church of Uganda Diocese is shown on the map below.

The link co-ordinator for the Diocese is Revd. Philip
Rowe, to whom all enquiries
concerning the link should be
addressed.
A portable Uganda exhibition and short video 'Introducing
Uganda' with
slides and notes may also be borrowed by parishes.

The Church of Uganda
The Anglican Church Of Uganda is a Province of the worldwide Anglican Communion and has dioceses, archdeacons and parishes, similar to the Bristol Diocese, but their bishops tend to be more influential. Their archdeaconries are more like our deaneries and their parish clergy - male and female - move around more frequently. The Church of Uganda has a positive role in primary education and primary health care, often in partnership with national and local government provision. For example, in Kampala the church-run Mengo Hospital shares some staff with the state-run Mulago Hospital. Each Diocese makes a contribution to education about AIDS, and the orphans resulting from this disease.

It was once said that 25% of the population of Kampala was HIV positive, although the latest figures suggest that the peak may well be past now. The Mothers' Union is a powerful force within the life of the church (with its own independent system of links and contacts) and in some places there is a Fathers' Union! The common RE syllabus and co-operative Bible translations are helping to bring ecumenical links to the country.
The church is at the forefront of forming and influencing the moral and spiritual life of the nation and also in the material development of the people at local level.
Visitors to the Church of Uganda cannot fail to be affected by the strength of their clear faith and the joy of their Christian witness and worship.
