Anglican Chaplaincy in the Diocese of Bristol

The Diocese of Bristol currently funds Anglican Chaplains at the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

University of Bristol

The Chaplaincy at the University of Bristol has worked ecumenically for many years, and in 2006 it was reconstituted as a Multifaith Chaplaincy.  It is now based in a well-resourced Chaplaincy Centre in the main precinct of the University, and aims to be a place of welcome, offering pastoral and spiritual support to all members of the University, regardless of their religious commitment.  There are regular events and activities providing opportunities to explore or deepen particular faiths as well as to engage with those of other faiths.

The Multifaith Chaplaincy is resourced by a diverse team of full and part-time chaplains and faith contacts, representing Judaism, Islam and Buddhism as well as many Christian denominations.  As well as being supported by its constituent faith communities, it is also very much part of the University, and works closely with the other Student Services departments.

Ed DavisRevd Ed Davis has been the Anglican chaplain since 2007, and since 2008 has also been the team’s Coordinating Chaplain.  He is linked to the Highbury Partnership of St Paul’s Clifton, Cotham Parish Church, and St Matthew’s Kingsdown, and also acts as a tutor on the Southern Theological Education and Training Scheme (STETS).

University of the West of England

The Living Centre is a pioneering service at the University of the West of England and a fully integrated component of the University’s Student Services. It has the benefit of a wonderful building, ‘The Octagon’, providing excellent facilities at the heart of the Frenchay campus.

The Living Centre supports all staff and students in the exploration of the ‘essence of being human’ around eight aspects: spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, social, vocational, environmental and recreational. It does this through opportunities to practice and explore faith and spirituality and health and wellbeing across a broad spectrum of beliefs and practices.

The Living Centre is supported by University and Community contacts from a range of backgrounds and interests, enabling a programme of regular events and activities including: teaching and learning seminars, complementary therapies and classes and social and community building forums. We also host a variety of student and staff societies.

Among the variety of religious expressions at UWE and specific festival celebrations, the Anglican Chaplain leads prayers at The Living Centre on Frenchay campus every Wednesday lunchtime at 12.10pm during term time.

Ian YemmIan Yemm has been Anglican Chaplain at UWE since 2010. A graduate in Theology and Religious Studies and Music and a postgraduate in Voice and Opera, he is currently completing an MA in Christian Spirituality with a view to continuing with doctoral research.

He has a specific interest in Pastoral Care and Spiritual Direction. Additionally, Ian is a professional singer and voice teacher and teaches the lay clerks and choral scholars at Bristol Cathedral.
