More information on these guidelines:

As part of a wider motion on domestic abuse the General Synod called for national guidelines to be issued by the Archbishops’ Council for those with pastoral responsibilities. The purposes of these guidelines are:

- to encourage churches to become places of safety for survivors of domestic abuse;
- to identify and outline the appropriate relationship of those with pastoral
care responsibilities with both survivors and perpetrators of domestic abuse,
including those in minority ethnic communities;
- to provide a brief introduction to the issues;
- to raise awareness about other agencies, support services, resources and
expertise, and to encourage collaboration;
- to provide a tool and incentive for further training.

The aim of the guidelines is to inform, direct and equip those working at a local level – not only those working in authorised ministries such as clergy, readers or pastoral assistants, but also those who may be entrusted by survivors or perpetrators to hear their story and who want to offer the most appropriate care.
